Ignatieff: still soft on crime
February 11, 2011

PRINCE GEORGE, February 11, 2011 –  Dick Harris (Cariboo-Prince George) BC/Yukon Caucus Chair expressed disappointment that the Liberals decided to go soft on cracking down on drug dealers. Ignatieff’s decision yesterday opposed legislation that would have imposed mandatory prison sentences on drug dealers that sell near schools.
“Again, Ignatieff’s Liberals have chosen to prioritize drug dealers and criminals over law abiding citizens. We still want to ensure that serious drug offences involving organized crime or violence result in mandatory jail time,” said Dick Harris.

Harris explained that drug trafficking and production is the most significant source of illicit money for organized crime groups. “This Conservative Government heard loud and clear that Canadians were tired of the old ‘soft on crime’ Liberal policies that allow criminals to roam our streets. We need to protect our communities and our children, and in order to do that, we need to ensure that crimes that target our youth have serious consequences, including jail time,” concluded Harris
