Yesterday Prime Minister Stephen Harper joined Canadians from coast to coast who stopped to pay tribute to our veterans and to the many men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of Canada’s freedom.
Our veterans fought and sacrificed for the values that shaped Canada into the proud, confident place it is today - one of the strongest, safest and most prosperous countries of the world. They represent the very best of what it means to be Canadian and embody, in every sense, what it means to be a hero.
Today, thousands of Canadian men and women continue this tradition of selfless service in the Canadian Forces. Whether they are serving in Afghanistan or as part of a peacekeeping mission, the men and women of the Canadian Forces represent the very best of our country and deserve our continued gratitude and support.
Those who served our country, and those who serve today, exemplify the highest ideals of duty, courage and loyalty. They set an example for all of us to follow.
Our duty – so small in comparison – is simply to remember them, never take for granted the values that they defend and never pass up a chance to say ‘thank you’ in return.
