HARRIS TO SHEPHERD TOUGH ANTI-VIOLENT CRIME BILL
October 30, 2007

Ottawa – Dick Harris, MP for Cariboo-Prince George and BC Caucus Chair has been named to a special legislative committee that will deal with the passing through of Bill C-2 – the Conservative Government’s new tough legislation dubbed as the "Tackle Violent Crime" Bill.

Harris said, "I’m anxious to help ensure that this Bill will effectively deliver a crushing blow to the escalating violent crime in our country. Canadians should not have to worry about their safety and that of their families in such a great country as ours.”

This single, comprehensive, “Tackle Violent Crime” bill is a core priority of the Conservative Government. Bill C-2 includes: raising the age of protection from 14 to 16 to better protect youth from sexual predators; protects society from dangerous offenders; gets serious with drug-impaired divers and, toughens sentencing and bail for those who commit gun crimes.

“I’ll do whatever it takes to ensure that this Bill goes through in a form that will surely handle violent crime in a way that Canadians have been calling for,” Harris concluded.
