JULY 31 DEADLINE FOR BC LIVESTOCK DROUGHT ASSISTANCE
July 26, 2007

OTTAWA, Ontario – British Columbia livestock producers are reminded that they have until July 31, 2007, to apply for funding assistance to help address the impact of drought in 2006.

In May, the federal and B.C. governments announced an investment of $7.5 million to assist livestock owners in Northern B.C. who suffered economic hardship in 2006 due to drought. The federal government is contributing $4.5 million with British Columbia providing $3 million. Of the total funding, $4.5 million is dedicated to direct payments through the Livestock Drought Assistance Program to owners of cattle and other eligible livestock.

Drought conditions in the summer of 2006 reduced hay and forage yields by up to 50 percent in Northern B.C. Producers were left with higher costs for feed, water and other expenses.

B.C. livestock producers can request a Livestock Drought Assistance Program application form by calling the AAFC toll-free line at 1 -800-667-8567.
